Accidents or life-threatening emergencies can happen to anyone, at any time and anywhere. Your ability to administer first aid skills quickly and effectively will determine the outcomes for victims, and may even mean the difference between life and death.

That is why the Occupational Health and Safety Act requires all employers to have sufficient numbers of well-trained first aiders. To meet this requirement for most workplaces, you need to undergo workplace first aid training such as  the First Aid Level 1 (NQF) Course, which will equip you with the basic first aid knowledge and skills to assist in most emergencies.

People who work in higher-risk environments, like factories, industry, or mining, could alternatively take the Level 1-3 course. Even if your workplace is lower risk, you may consider this additional compliance course, which will enable you to handle a wider range of emergencies, take a lead role at workplace accident scenes, help with scene management, and coordinate with the responding emergency services.  

Within 14 days of completing either course, delegates will be issued a first aid certificate to prove compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act’s first aid training requirements.

Level 1 (NQF) First Aid course content

• Introduction, principles of first aid, legal aspects and scene safety
• Positioning and elementary anatomy and physiology
• Scene survey and casualty assessment
• Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and choking
• Shock and fainting
• Bleeding, wounds and burns
• Fractures, sprains and strains
• Head, spinal, chest and abdominal injuries
• Environmental emergencies, bites, stings and poisoning
• Record keeping

Because of the hands-on nature of this training, it is offered in person at Absolute Health Services' excellent training facilities in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban & Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth). Alternatively, if your employer has eight or more people needing to take a course, the instructors can come to you and conduct the training on site.
